Though finding ants in their home isn’t something most people are happy about, ants are fascinating creatures. Below, we’ve compiled some interesting facts that might surprise you.
There are over 12,000 different types of ants.
Though there are thousands of discovered ant species, only four types of ants are common household pests in Ontario. Those species are carpenter ants, pharaoh ants, fire ants and pavement ants.
Ants have been found on every continent except Antarctica.
There are ant species native to every continent on earth, except Antarctica where it is too cold for ants (and most life forms!) to exist naturally.
Ants can carry 50 times their own weight.
This is a commonly repeated fact that you might have heard before, but it’s true. Ants can life 50 times their own weight with their jaws (or mandibles). This is the equivalent of a 200 pound man lifting 4.5 metric tonnes!
Ants coexisted with dinosaurs.
Ants came into existence approximately 130 million years ago. This makes them and dinosaurs co-inhabitants of earth. There is fossil evidence that suggests ants lived side by side with dinosaurs
There are approximately 1.5 million ants for every human on earth.
If you add up the weight of every ant on the planet, and the weight of all the humans on earth, the two numbers would be roughly equivalent. That means ants take up just as much space on the planet as we do!
Some ant species farm, or herd other insects.
Ant farmers and ranchers? It might sound ridiculous, but it’s true. Ants have been known to farm certain types of fungus that are beneficial to their colony. They’ve also been known to ‘herd’ aphids and use them to pollinate plants in order to produce food for themselves.
Some ant species will imprison ants from other colonies or species.
Yep, that’s right, some types of ants imprison other ants, and make them do work for the colony. Some species of ants are also cannibalistic and will eat other types of ants for the protein. So those enslaved ants may eventually become dinner.
Ants recognize one another by scent.
You probably don’t notice that ants have a smell, however ants’ olfactory senses are able to detect the subtle differences in scent between each colony member. Ants use their antennae to sniff other ants, and they can recognize other individuals this way.
