About Ants

What Do Ants Look Like?

Ants are a part of the insect family. Most ant species share the same, three-part body structure and have six legs and two antennae. They typically appear black, brown, red or yellow and range in size from a few millimeters to over a centimeter. Some ant species may also have wings.

Where Will I Find Ants?

Most types of ants are dirt-dwellers meaning that they burrow their nests underground. This means gaps and cracks in pavement, stone and foundations are common hiding places for ants. If these spots are near doors or windows, it may lead ants to trek inside your home in search of food.

However some types of ants, like carpenter ants, prefer to build their nests in wood. Since most homes contain a significant amount of wood, carpenter ants are a common problem in Ontario.

Are Ants Attracted to Human Food?

Though carpenter ants excavate wood to build their burrow, they do not eat it like termites do. Ants are not picky eaters, however. They will scavenge just about anything they can access, especially sweets and proteins.

A typical ant diet consists mostly of other small insects and plant-based materials including nectar and honeydew, which is the name given to a sugary substance insects such as aphids excrete when they eat plant juices.

Because ants’ natural diet consists of sweet nectars, they’re innately attracted to other sweets. If you have fruits or other foods with high sugar content lying about, your home is a prime target for ants.

Do Ants Bite?

Though not all types of ants bite, there are some ant species that do. Fire ants, for instance, are well known for their stinging ant bites. Carpenter ants have also been known to bite. Most types of ants that bite are not particularly aggressive, however be wary that ants bite when irritated.

Usually ant bites feel like a small pinch. It’s rare to have a strong reaction (like with bee and wasp bites) since ant bites rarely inject strong venom. An exception is the fire ant, which is known to cause painful bites.

How Do I Remove Ants?

When ants invade, it can be difficult and time consuming to get rid of them. Since they burrow nests underground and into difficult-to-reach areas, killing ants is more complicated than you would expect.

Ant baits and ant traps are a popular method to kill ant infestations. They rely on the process of worker ants carrying poison back to the nest, eventually killing the queen ant and, as a result, the entire ant colony. Commercially available ant traps and ant baits are less potent than the methods available to pest control companies. If the ants invading your home are persistent, consider calling a professional ant removal company, like Magical Pest Control, that specializes in getting rid of ants and can apply stronger, more effective ant removal treatments.

Magical Pest Control’s Ant Removal Division makes use of a variety of ant removal techniques that are specialized to kill various ant species, including carpenter ants. To learn more about the services we offer for killing ant infestations, contact us at (905) 738-6676.
