Fire ants are not native in any part of Canada. Typically fire ants are found in hotter climates, though some species of fire ants prefer damp climates, such as the European Fire Ant.
Though no type of fire ant is native to Canada, there are small pockets where fire ants have been found in the country. This is the result of travellers bringing them back from other climates where fire ants are common. Populations of fire ants have been found in B.C. and Ontario in the York Region of the GTA.
I’ve been bitten by an ant! It must be a fire ant, right?
Though fire ants are infamous for their stinging bite, they’re not the only type of ant that bites. Species of ants native to Canada, including carpenter ants and pharaoh ants, can also bite, though it’s fairly uncommon unless you’re threatening them or invading their territory. To distinguish fire ants, look at their appearance. Fire ants are typically lighter in colour than their native counterparts. Do ant treatments work on fire ants?
Since fire ants are prone to biting, we do not recommend getting near their nests (or ant hills), if you locate them. A large percentage of fire ants may be eliminated with granular ant baits, however since fire ants are a type of outdoor ant, ant baits will likely only reduce the ant population, rather than eliminate it entirely. If you find ant baits are not working for your situation, contact a local pest control company.
If you’re concerned that you may be dealing with stubborn fire ants, or any other type of ant, call Magical Pest Control to kill ants on your property.
