Having ants isn’t like having your dad’s aunt from Thunder Bay stay for the long weekend, although sometimes it can feel just as annoying. An ant infestation in your home is a whole different story.
Ants in the home can be a nuisance, but are they harmful to children and pets? Most household ants such as carpenter ants and pavement ants are not usually harmful to humans. They don’t typically bite, and if they do, it doesn’t hurt like a string from a fire ant. However sometimes ants may travel around and pick up harmful bacteria that can make you or your family sick in large doses. Cleaning your home regularly and frequent hand washing easily solve this issue.
The Ants In The Home That Can Do You Harm
Fire ants are the ones that can seriously harm humans, if they have an allergic reaction to them. Fire ants are common in southern United States however there are fire ants here in Canada and recently discovered in Richmond Hill. These ants usually stay outside, but their stings can hurt a lot when you’re trying to cut the grass or garden.
Another ant that can be harmful is the pharaoh ant because they can carry germs from one area to another. For example, they can be crawling around in your washroom and work their way to the kitchen. If it was just one or two ants it might not be a problem, but because pharaoh ants have huge colonies they can potentially transport large quantities of bacteria.
Be Careful When Getting Rid Of Ants
Using ant bait with boric acid is the best way to get rid of ants if you’re looking to kill ants and not displace them. Boric acid is less toxic than other treatments but you still have to be careful if you have dogs or children. We recommend using ant bait traps that are covered and placing them in areas where little hands can’t grab them. However, it’s important to ensure the ant bait is close to nest or pheromone trail, so use your discretion on what you think is a safe place. Humans must ingest a large quantity of boric acid for it to be toxic, so many consider it fairly safe for pets and kids.
Other safe homemade methods to get rid of ants in your home are:
- Spraying the ants and trails with hot soapy water or vinegar.
- Putting up boundaries with smells that ants don’t like such as black pepper, chalk or cayenne pepper.
- You can use grits as ant bait, which will expand in their stomach and kill them.
- You can also use diatomaceous earth (DE) which is natural and non-toxic to kids and pets. It’s made up of ground fossilized skeletons and as the ants step through it, it will get into the joints of the exoskeleton and in their breathing tubes. It’s effective against other types of insects such as earwigs, slugs, beetles, ticks, fleas, cockroaches, and bed bugs. DE is effective, non-toxic and inexpensive which makes it a very popular choice.
