So you’ve identified you have an ant problem but you don’t know where they’re coming from. It’s okay; they can be tricky to find. In order to get rid of ants effectively you need to find the ant nest first. It’s not always easy, but if you follow these tips you should be able to locate it.
You know how to handle scout ants but let’s talk a little more about their role in ant trails.
Ant trails are formed when the ant scout is rummaging around looking for food. They wander aimlessly until they reach something that they can bring back to the nest.
Once the scout ant has found your yummy leftovers he brings it back to the nest leaving a pheromone trail behind him. The way ants know which trail leads to food is through a higher pheromone concentration on the trail. The more ants traveling on one trail leave more pheromones. That sends a message to the other ants to follow that trail.
It doesn’t matter if they are carpenter ants or pharaoh ants, all household ants follow this pattern. And like the ants, if you follow the trail you will find the ant nest.
Steps to Locate An Ant Nest
- Follow the ants! You need to look for a high volume of ants that will tell you if you’re closer to a food source or their nest. It can be tempting to kill ants as they walk around, but before you do that, see where they go. They may just lead you to the nest. If they do, you’ll have an easier time getting rid of ants.
- Ants like to walk close to edges and walls. It’s like their safety blanket because they naturally want to follow a path of some kind. Carpenter ants and pavement ants especially like to stay on the edge of wood or asphalt.
- Search for other evidence of an ant nest. Carpenter ants will leave little piles of sawdust where they burrow and other ants will create waste material. This waste material is called frass and it’s a somewhat solid small black pellet.
- Listening for ants may seem silly, but it works. If you have a stethoscope it makes it easier for you to listen to ants in the walls. If you don’t, put your ear against the wall and see if you can hear them.
